Chapter History
In April 1975, Brenda McCurry and Martha Moats came to Salisbury State College to colonize a chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha. After only a short period of time, the first group of new members were pledged on April 10, 1975. Due to the fact that the semester was winding down the group quickly elected officers and started planning a retreat for the summer.
The summer retreat was held in the town of Lewes, Delaware where the ladies planned both formal and informal rush for the following semesters. In September of 1975, the women held an informal rush and pledged eight young women. During, formal rush that spring they pledged another eight young women as well.
In the fall semester the colony participated in other activities such as a Founder's Day service, an Interfraternity Dance, a Halloween Party, a service project for a nearby NARC center, and a camping retreat held at Ft. Frederick State Park.
Soon enough the colony had finally reached its membership goal in November of 1975 with the help and encouragement of advisors and alumnae support. The Installation Weekend was then set for December 5th, 6th, and 7th of that same year.
The first Theta Delta Zeta Week was held the week before the installation of the chapter. During this week, the ladies participated in activities involving strong sisterhood. On Monday the group of women participated in Fun Night performing skits with paper bags. Tuesday was Friendship Night with readings on friendship and entertainment by members. Sisterhood Night was then on Wednesday, where a sliver paper chain was made with each link having the name of a member. This chain symbolized unity as well as strength of the colony. On Thursday was the Pledge Pin Service with Friday following and beginning the Installation Weekend. That weekend marked the installation of the Theta Delta chapter at Salisbury State College.
The Theta Delta chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha was the first sorority founded at Salisbury State College.
